Visit to St. Basil the Great Greek Orthodox Church by Joshua Varghese
On Sunday, May 18th, Rev. Fr. Joel Mathew (Assistant Vicar) and approximately 20 MGOCSM and FOCUS Youth members from St. Thomas Orthodox Cathedral attended the Greek Festival in Katy, Texas. The festival is held every year in the Houston area at St. Basil the Great Greek Orthodox Church. The festival is held to raise money for the parish, but it also allows everyone to have the opportunity to experience the Greek culture.
While at the festival, the members got the chance to experience some of the Greek food and desserts, and also went on a tour of the church. The church was beautiful from top to bottom, filled with icons of Jesus Christ, the Theotokos, and the disciples, among many other icons. The Vicar of the church also gave everyone in attendance a brief explanation of the Greek Orthodox Church and its faith and history. There were also explanations of baptism and other customs of the faith given by the Deacon of the church. These explanations allowed everyone to see how the Orthodox Church differed from the Western Churches. Overall, the experience was a blessed one. It gave everyone the chance to experience the Greek culture and learn more about our sister church.
